Bend in the River, by Kathryn Willlis

Bend in the River, 12x16" oil on panel

It's almost a week since we got home from Idaho, and I'm just getting this painting finished. I started this painting from our campsite on the Salmon River in southern Idaho. It doesn't get much better than this. I have a photo of Steve floating by in our inflatable kayak, and thought about sticking him in the painting... maybe that will be a different version.

After a busy Open Studios weekend, I'm finally settling back into the routines of life at home. It's been hot all week, but finally tonight we're getting a hint of fall in the air. I love these subtle seasonal transitions.

Emma by Pamela Blaies

Emma
11" x 14"
Oil on Canvas

This little girl is so sweet! She is the niece of a friend and her name is Emma. I focused all the sunlight on her as if she were under a spotlight on stage. Sitting on a park bench, off in her own little world, she shines brighter than all the flowers in the garden.

New Textured Birch Painting by Niki Gulley

"Colorful Transformation" ©2011 by Niki Gulley
textured oil painting • 36" x 48"

Rather than create an exact replica of the forest, I wanted to focus on brilliant color and simple shapes to see if I could communicate the excitement I feel when surrounded by nature. Using energetic diagonal strokes and thick, textured paint, I hope you get a sense of the motion in the leaves and the power of nature to invigorate your spirit. I just love how this piece captured that essence!

For more information on this birch painting, e-mail me at Niki Gulley.

BLACK and WHITE HORSE in PALETTE KNIFE

This boy was meant to be finished and dry for this upcoming Friday's group show at the Local Color Gallery in Raleigh...However, life had other ideas! With everything going on, I put the painting aside and forgot to finish the sides. It would have looked really cool displayed on the wall with my other 12 x 12 horse paintings.

Purple Mist, Purple Irises, Palette Knife Painting Judy Mackey

"Purple Mist"
20" x  20", Oil on Board

Every now and then a flop turns out alright - like it was meant to be.  This painting is just that.  I'd painted a very thick iris painting - and yet - here and there there are bits of the lemony yellow undertoning showing through, especially in the top right hand.  I wanted it that way.  But the flowers and leaves I just could get the colors right.  It was turning much too dark for a light sky.  So I started to scrape.  The colors that remained on the canvas was starting to look right so I loaded up the palette and started over, however on several places I liked the way the streaks looked from the initial scraping so I laid down color and then used a rag to drag the paint.

Though textured the effect of the dragging the paint makes this look like a watercolor and the colors remained soft.

This painting is available through the on-line gallery, Ugallery.  A painting of mine is also on their sister site - Paperwork in a limited edition print form - however you have the ability to choose the size of print you'd like. If you get a chance, please visit the two sites.

Laundry Day by Pamela Blaies

Laundry Day
24" x 36"
Oil on Canvas

White sheets and pale fabrics slightly billow in the breeze as they dry on the clothesline. A colorful courtyard filled with flowers and climbing vines make for a beautiful place to work on laundry day. The light, color and life in this painting are so inviting, I almost want to throw out my electric dryer and join her.

Shades Of Gray - Janet Bludau

6" x 12"
Oil on Board
$95
I had fun with this one.  There is a painting site that publishes a new challenge to painters every week.  Artists can write in and give challenge ideas and this was a good one.  Your entire painting had to be done in rectangles.  It could be any subject matter, palette or brushwork.
As most artists know, there is no pure gray in color.  A gray is always "grayish" meaning it leans to blue or green or any other color.  To the naked eye (mine at least) the background gray here is a pretty mid value, soft gray.  The "grays" in the vase are more obvious in their color and have either more blue or more green in each of the rectangles.
Relying on photography and different computer monitors can raise some issues when it comes to viewing color online.  My website explains that I always allow returns of my artwork if for any reason you are not thrilled with your purchase!

Santa Fe Painting Workshop with Niki Gulley - Day 4

7x5 textured oil by Niki Gullley
Plein Air Painting & Photography Workshop in Santa Fe, NM
Day 4, afternoon location: Red Rocks

After painting the scenic overlook in the morning, we headed a little north of our location and focused in on this lone clump of unusual, striking rocks (scene below.) The distinct coloring and striations, made for a fun but challenging exercise in texture, light and shadow, and shape. By day 4, everybody was past their jitters from earlier in the week and thoroughly enjoying painting outdoors. With more confidence, they quickly sketched in these rock formations and complete some amazing pieces in just a couple of hours.

Peaceful Afternoons by Pamela Blaies

Peaceful Afternoon
20" x 24"
Oil on Canvas

We have a cedar pergola in our backyard almost exactly like this one. Ours is a little bigger and sits just outside our back door. It is also covered with a beautiful trumpet vine. Our vines haven't fully matured, yet and don't quite cover the entire pergola, but one day, it will look as magestic as this. I'm looking forward to the spring, when the vine blooms, the azaleas are flowering and I can spend time outside without passing out from the heat!

Day 4 of Plein Air Painting / Photo Workshop in Santa Fe w/ Niki Gulley

9x12 textured oil by Niki Gullley
Plein Air Painting & Photography Workshop in Santa Fe, NM
Day 4, morning location: Rio Chama

On Day 4 of our Santa Fe workshop, we headed out early for our most complex location, a striking scenic overlook of the Rio Chama. Being perched along the rim of a cliff, our group was a little nervous, but once they adjusted to the height, they could really appreciate the beauty of the scene for their paintings. With so much going on below and only a half day to capture the landscape, we had to majorly simplify the canyon into basic shapes and colors. The river not only served as a perfect focal point, but also created a soft flowing line to lead the viewer's eye through our paintings. The rocky mountains provided a contrasting craggy texture and the green foliage added some life and color to the desert landscape.

Choosing to paint with palette knife today, I had a lot of fun playing with textures and mixing colors, which ended up adding to a feeling of spontaneity in the final painting, filled with energy and movement. While outside their comfort zone, my students' also produced some of their best paintings from the trip!

Butterfly Song (Harkness Park) by Roxanne Steed

20"x20" oil on stretched canvas

"This was one of those perfect New England days in late summer where the spirit of autumn takes a first stealing flight, like a spy, through the ripening country-side, and, with feigned sympathy for those who droop with August heat, puts her cool cloak of bracing air about leaf and flower and human shoulders." ~Sarah Orne Jewett

This quote describes the weather today so well. It did feel like just a touch of fall was in the air. A bit scary/suspicious if you ask me, as I'm not ready at all for summer to end. It feels like it just got here! This scene is back at Harkness Park, the joe-pye weeds in this field are so pretty. Butterflies love it, and are flitting along the blossom tops.

This painting is available directly from the artist in my DailyPainter.com gallery store.

An Evening to Remember by Pamela Blaies

Garden Party to Remember
11" x 14"
Oil on Canvas

I remember when my husband built a pergola for me over the back porch of our first house together. He thought I was crazy when I suggested we attach christmas lights to it (it was nowhere near Christmas time,) but he indulged me and we wrapped hundreds of the tiny christmas lights carefully around each of the slats overhead . That evening, we turned them on, and the warm, twinkly glow transformed our porch into a dreamy place. Candles and string lights add magic to an evening. I used very warm colors to bring an exaggerated contrast to the cool evening colors in the garden to add some sparkle to this table prepared for an evening to remember.

Bluff Mountain....Palette knife painting by Peg Whitacre

Bluff Mountain towers over much of the area around Pigeon Forge, TN and can be seen from many places.  I happen to be fortunate to live in one of those places and am able to view the mountain and the valley from my home some distance away.  I have photographed it many times and at different times of the year, but this early morning view has been one of my favorites.  This 12x16 canvas was entirely painted with a palette knife.  In this area of East Tennessee we get lots of fog and early morning mist.  Especially in the summer the mountains frequently do a disappearing act and until the atmosphere clears and the humidity drops our "views"  are interrupted.  But when they are "out there" they are very reassuring to look at.  I hope you enjoy this view.  The painting is available and I can be contacted at pwhitacre@att.net.
