MORE ART COMMENTS BY TOM BROWN



Palette knife work is a wonderful marriage of realism and abstract painting. The bold strokes of luscious color carry impact and energy. It’s a pure joy and I always feel an adrenalin rush as I grab my knife and dive in.

If you’re an artist who has never tried it, do yourself a favor and give it a shot. It’s great fun.

But it’s critical to be able to handle COLOR well.

Colors are your vocabulary in the language of painting.
To become fluent in expressing yourself, you must learn color mixing until you can achieve any combination without hesitation.

Bold color or subdued color. “Optical” color mixtures. Warms and cools.

Then you can relax and let the painting unfold as if it’s painting itself.
