Climbing Trees oil painting by Niki Gulley

"Climbing Trees II" ©2010 Niki Gulley
48" x 36" oil on canvas

In this painting, I wanted you to you to experience the wonderment of looking up into the treetops – just like you did when you were a kid. Choosing playful colors and thick chunky staccato strokes adds to that childlike whimsy and I hope you are transported back to a happy, carefree time and place.

Palette Knife Daily Floral Painting - Red Flowers by Judy Mackey

"Be Still My Heart"
12 x 12 inches, Oil on Canvas
I think one of our other palette knife painters mentioned that painting with a palette knife comes easily to her. I'm in agreement. I love the feel of the thick paint as it drags or smooths across a surface. Sometimes it's like icing a cake and sometimes the effect is totally a surprise. Colors mix on the surface or as I drag the knife new colors emerge from the layers of thick paint. The feeling is like being a child again playing with finger paints.
If you are a visitor to this blog won't you consider subscribing to receive updates of this blog? Speaking for myself, I know that when I receive an email from the Palette Knife Painters and open the email, it thrills me to see all the different paintings from our artists.

"Green, in the wizard arms
Of the foam-bearded Atlantic,
An isle of old enchantment,
A melancholy isle,
Enchanted and dreaming lies...."
- John Todhunter

Have you ever been to a new place and not felt at all like a stranger? Like you've been there before (or some part of you has)? Over the last five years of traveling over to Ireland, I've felt so very welcome, perfectly at home, and I think of my travels almost everyday that I am actually back home. I'm enjoying going through all my photos & reference materials for these new paintings I'm working on.

"Poppy Meadow" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting on canvas

I have an ongoing love affair with poppies. They are usually red but can be orange, pink, salmon, yellow, any color. I have yet to see a real Himalayan blue poppy, but have seen images in seed catalogues and in magazine. Since I doubt I'll be in that area of the world in the near future, I can only imagine how beautiful they are growing naturally in the wild.

So...if you follow my blogs at all, you'll see a ton of paintings that are full of poppies! I hope that you enjoy them as much as I do!

"Blissfull Baaaah" by Roxanne Steed, palette knife painter

click here to bid on this painting

I am so happy to be a part of this group! I find the textural quality of paint an exciting element of painting as much as design, composition, and color. Evoking an emotional response to a 'sense of place' is a great thrill for me.

I have been working with palette knives for the last several years after continuing efforts to lay thicker paint with a brush...this was like a new found freedom to express what I was seeing!

"Lilacs and Blues" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting on canvas

This is a palette knife oil painting on canvas, a sunset to recall late summer evenings near the Rocky Mountains. Palette knives challenge some painters, but I feel more challenged by brushes, frankly. When using a palette knife to paint (or a painting knife, for that matter), the oil paints just is so reminiscent of butter sliding across a warm piece of toast. It's so much fun! I guess it's more difficult for some people, but to me, this is just the most delightful way to paint true colors.

"Lilacs and Blues", unframed 10"x20" palette knife oil painting, $595 includes s&h in N. America, Paypal preferred, click button below or write me at KarlaNolan@gmail.com for more information on this luscious painting -- Thanks for looking!

Afternoon In The City by Palette Knife Painter Ann Gorbett

Afternoon in the City
8" x 8" x .75"
Oil

This painting has been around. It recently won an Honorable Mention award at the Spring Member Show of the Foxboro Art Association.

And, it will also make it's national debut in the Fall 2010 catalog for Dick Blick Art Supplies on the painting knife page:
And it currently resides at the residence of my friends' place in NYC who are lucky enough to have this view out onto Great Jones Ave and which also just so happens to includes a view of the art studio of Robert Rauschenberg (with the big elevator that transported some of his big pieces).

Cool.

"Pink Poppy" by Karla Nolan, palette knife oil painting on canvas panel

Well, here I am on a palette knife painters blogspot and I am thrilled to join the company involved in putting together these posts. Palette knife painting is a joy -- brushes and I argue because I get more "mud" than good color via the use of brushes -- palette knives most often deliver good, clean colors -- and they're fun to mix up some new variations on those colors, too! Thank you, Judy Mackey, for creating this lovely blogspot.

This is one of my very favorite palette knife oil paintings, completed a while back. It is of a pink poppy found in our garden. My husband and I went to France with our daughters some years ago and I saw this type of poppy growing Monet's garden at Giverny. I came home and found a similar one at a local greenhouse. I hope you like it as much as I do!

Untold Story - Original Contemporary Abstract Palette Knife Painting by Texas Artist Filomena de Andrade Booth

Untold Story
30"x30"x1.5"
Acrylic on Canvas

I recently started painting with a huge trowel-like palette knife.  This is a far cry from my usual technique of applying thin glazes of color.  By applying thick layers of color, scraping and scratching out various areas of the painting, I am able to build up a heavy texture on the canvas.

This painting is currently available for sale.  Please contact me for more information.
